How Compression Works
Lowering quality discards less-visible image detail. At 80% most photos look almost identical to the original but may be 50–70% smaller.
If your image is wider than the max width, it gets resized proportionally before compression, further reducing file size.
WebP typically produces the smallest files. JPG is widely compatible. PNG is lossless and doesn't benefit much from quality reduction.
FAQ
Which format gives the smallest file?
WebP typically produces the smallest output at any given quality level. JPG is a close second. PNG compression is lossless, so quality settings have less impact.
What quality level should I use for web images?
For hero/banner images: 80–85%. For thumbnails: 70–75%. For general web use: 75–85%. Below 60% visible artifacts become noticeable in most photos.
Can I undo the compression?
No. Lossy compression permanently removes data. Always keep your original file if you might need it later.
